Most people spend their days cycling between these two modes without thinking about it. Waking up activates some sympathetic activity; eating a meal, winding down for bed, or laughing with a friend shifts you toward parasympathetic dominance. The transition between them is normal and healthy.

Practices that are associated with supporting parasympathetic activity include:

  • Slow, diaphragmatic breathing — particularly longer exhales, which directly stimulate the vagus nerve
  • Regular physical activity — exercise temporarily activates the SNS but supports better parasympathetic recovery over time
  • Adequate sleep — the body does most of its parasympathetic restoration during sleep
  • Social connection — positive social interaction is associated with reduced stress hormone levels
  • Mindfulness and relaxation practices — evidence suggests these can reduce physiological markers of stress
